Honda . How to Replace the Brake Lights in a 2003 Honda CR-VThe brake lights on a 2003 Honda CR-V are located on the tailgate. When a brake light goes out, it can be repaired by installing a new bulb. There are four bulbs on the taillight assembly--the stop or taillight bulb, the reverse light, the turn signal, and the side marker. Be sure to take note of which one is burned out when replacing the bulbs. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Flat-blade screwdriver Phillips-head screwdriverInstructions Step by Step : 1 Open the tailgate. 2 Place a cloth along the edge of the brake-light cover. This protects the cover when it is being removed. 3 Pry the cover off by inserting the edge of the small flat-blade screwdriver into into the edge of the cover and gently twisting back and forth. 4 Remove the two screws under the taillight cover using a Phillips-head screwdriver. One screw is near the top and the other is near the bottom. 5 Pull the taillight assembly away from the car. 6 Grasp the bulb socket and turn it one-quarter turn counterclockwise, then pull to remove. 7 Pull the bulb straight out of the socket to remove. 8 Insert the new bulb into the socket, pressing until it clicks into place. 9 Replace the bulb socket into the taillight assembly. Turn it clockwise until it locks into place. Step by Step : 10 Replace the taillight assembly. Insert the two screws with the Phillips-head screwdriver. Step by Step : 11 Put the taillight cover in place. Press on it until it snaps back into place. Tips & Warnings Test the new bulb after replacing, but before reassembling the taillight assembly and cover.
Honda . How to Replace a Brake Light Switch on a CamryThe Camry was first designed and built in the early 1980s as an economical front-wheel-drive sedan with a front transverse-mounted four-cylinder engine. Although the Camry has grown in size over the years and is considered a mid-sized car, as of 2010 the Camry still utilizes a four-cylinder, transverse-mounted engine to power the front wheels. The brake-light switch in your Camry is mounted under the dashboard and activates the rear brake lights when you depress the brake pedal. If your rear brake lights are malfunctioning, you may have a bad brake-light switch. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Replacement brake light switch Step by Step : 1 Open the driver's side front door. 2 Locate the brake-light switch mounted to the underside of the dashboard near the top of the brake pedal. 3 Unplug the wiring connector from the switch by pushing in on the tabs on each side of the connector and pulling it straight out. 4 Grasp the brake-light switch and rotate it in a counterclockwise direction while pulling it straight out of its mounting hole. 5 Insert a new brake-light switch into the mounting hole and rotate it in a clockwise direction until it locks into place. 6 Push the wiring connector back into the new brake-light switch until it snaps into place. Tips & Warnings The symptoms of a bad brake-light switch are brake lights that remain on all of the time, or do not work at all. Replacement of the switch may correct these problems. However, all brake lights operate off of the same fuse in the vehicle's fuse box, so check that before you purchase a new brake-light switch. Check your owner's guide for the location of the brake-light fuse. A single brake light not working is more likely a blown bulb or a problem with the bulb socket, such as corrosion. Replacement brake-light switches for your Camry are available at your Toyota dealer or from auto-parts stores. *Some auto repair experts believe that it's more accurate to determine how often you should change your oil by the number of cold starts your engine experiences than by the number of miles it's driven. So if you make a lot of short trips each day and leave the car parked long enough to have your engine cool down between them, you may want to take this into considera tion when you're deciding how often to change your oil. Hart to Change \lour OH \lourself Changing oil is easy. In fact, unless your oil filter and/or oil drain plug is impossible to reach, you have good reasons to change your oil and oil filter yourself. (During one of my TV guest appearances, Regis Philbin changed the oil in a car in five minutes, and he didn't get a spot on his Italian silk suit!) All you have to do is unscrew a plug and a filter, let the oil drain out, replace the filter and plug, and pour in some new oil. If you have a professional do it for you, you have to telephone the shop to make an appointment, drive the car in, either wait for it or find a ride home and back again to pick it up, and then wait until they make up your bill — which takes much longer. If you go to one of those quickie oil change places, you don't know what viscosity of oil they've used, whether they really changed the filter, and whether the drain plug was secured properly. Just be sure that they use high-quality oil and that they change the oil filter, too. Get your supplies together Before you start the job, assemble the following items: Oil: Check your owner's manual to find the proper oil recommended for your car and how many quarts you need. (As a general rule, most vehicles require 5 to 6 quarts of oil, but you don't want to risk overfilling it.) If you have no manual, call a local dealer who sells your vehicle make and model and ask someone in the service department. Whenever they said that the car needed the oil changed, I scheduled the work promptly. Yet when I took the engine apart in an adult-education automotive class, I found that the mechanics had never changed the oil! This lack of proper lubrication had led to big trouble: The dirty old oil had formed big, black pebbles, and the camshaft had practically worn away! When this happens, either you opt for major and expensive surgery or you get rid of the vehicle. As I sadly watched my dear Macho-Mobile vanish into the sunset, the major question in my mind was, "How did this happen?" The answer, unfortunately, was that I'd depended on someone else for lubrication reminders and had trusted someone else to do the job properly. Not only had I been paying at least twice as much as it would have cost to do the job myself, but I ended up paying to replace a carthat could have gone almost twice as far if it had been lubricated properly. If this sad story inspires you to undertake your own lubrication work, then dear old M-M will not have been towed away in vain. Besides, paying someone a lot of money to do something that you can do yourself in a couple of minutes is just plain silly. And if you can unscrew the top of a bottle, you can change your oil without any trouble. An oil filter: Under the hood of your car, sticking out of the engine, is what looks like a tin can screwed into your engine block. This is your oil filter (see Figure 15-4). As the oil circulates from the oil pan through your engine, it passes through this filter, which cleans the oil and removes some of the particles of metal and dirt. You should change the oil filter every time you change your oil, especially if you're going to do so less frequently than every 3,000 miles. Oil filters sell for very little at auto supply stores; at a service station, you'll pay more. Make sure to get the right filter for your car's make and model. You may wonder what happens if your oil filter gets totally clogged and no more oil can pass through it. Your friendly auto designers have saved your bacon by installing a pressure relief valve that pops open, allowing the oil to bypass the filter so that the engine isn't starved of oil. Of course, all the dirt and metal particles then circulate through your precious bearings and onto your cylinder walls until you change your clogged filter. Check the price of an oil filter at your dealer's parts department. If it's within a dollar or two of the auto parts store price, buy it. It's probably a better filter. (Some of the auto parts store filters are very cheaply made, and they fail occasionally.) . Chapter 15: Changing Your Oil 22 7 is* An oil filter wrench (optional): Most oil filters screw on and off. If your old filter hasn't been changed in a long time, you may need an oil filter wrench, shown in Figure 15-5, to unscrew your filter (but always tighten the new one by hand to avoid crushing the seal).
